For those of you who don’t know the person in this picture this is the German composer Richard Wagner. This man has many great achievement among them changing the face of Opera. Before Wagner, opera houses were always had the lights on during any performance, the orchestra was also in plan view. He basically changed the format of the opera house by turning it into a movie theater in a way. The lights were off during a performance, the orchestra no longer in the open but creative hidden to make the sound resonate through out the theater. He also wrote the Der Ring des Nibelungen, four operas linked together, they take around 18 hours to perform.
But you are wondering about the politics.
He was part of a group that believed all the princes of what ended up making Germany should be done away with. He ended up in exile because of his belief but oddly enough he was rescued by the King of Bavaria. Without that rescue he may never have written the Ring Cycle. He was also an outspoken as an antisemitic. He believed that his music would inspire National pride in Germany. When Hitler came to power he was inspired not only by the music of Wagner, but also because of Wagner’s persona beliefs he chose to use much of Wagner’s works to inspire the Germany Nation.
Now a days there are many people who do not like Wagner’s music because of how it was used by Hitler and because of his own attitudes towards the Jews.
A man who changed the course of Opera, theater and in some ways had an impact on how movies are viewed today, now goes by the wayside because of his political views and who he was later associated with.
Just a piece of history.
New Kids On The Block will be releasing their new album “10” (Out in April). I must admit I wasn’t really a NKOTB fan before, I was more of a Backstreet Boys person, but I have been slowly warming to the new NKOTB.
With that I though I would look at a few of the Boy bands that have appealed in the past and now.
Backstreet Boys are also still going strong, they did an album with NKOTB and came out with their own “This is us.” They will be having their 20th Anniversary this year and a new album will be coming out soon.
McFly has released “Memory Lane, The Best of McFly” and are out traveling doing great shows. We hope to see the new album soon, but enjoy this video for starters.
And the new members of the boy band breed, who seem to be making an impression here is the US is One Direction.
First up, I’d like to congratulate Billy K Band for making the Nashville Tennessee Music Charts. We interviewed him back in 2011 before his recent album (Outrun the Rain) was started. He also has a page now on MTV and CMT.
It’s an album with a tremendous amount of feeling. I’ve now listened to it a number of time and it’s now one of those I put on my hot list. If you haven’t heard it, take a listen and let me know what you think.
Last on my list to talk about today is the Oscar for Sound Editing.
If you hadn’t heard it was a tie this year between Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty.
This is one of the category I usually get right on the picks, and well this year I was half right.
Not an easy category to pick when you understand what it is all about, but if a movie messes this up you definitely know. I remember when I heard We Come in Peace without the proper sound in it. Makes a big difference.
The same with Sound Mixing, if it’s done poorly it’s the first thing you pick up on in a movie.
Congrats to the Oscar winners.
I don’t normally watch things like “The Voice” or shows like that but I have a couple friends who convinced me to watch, but I watched season 3 and found two people I would like to talk about this time out.
Chris Mann who made it to the last four during the season is first up. His album “Roads” is now available and he was just on “Conan” showing it off. This singer songwriter hails from Kansas and sings pop, opera, and adult contemporary. If you like any of that style of music you should check out everything Chris Mann at his website.
Next up is Jesse Campbell.
A number of people believed that believed he got the shaft from his coach (Christina Aguilera).
I’m one of those. He hails from Illinois and sings R&B, gospel. You can purchase songs he performed on his website and from iTunes. He is looking for help to get his new album out, but he does have three older albums out.
Both artist have there albums available on Amazon. Take a listen.
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 15,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 3 Film Festivals
Thanks to all of you for making 2012 a great year!
Pitch Perfect, is the story of a college a capella singing group and the competition. Although I never want to give the whole plot away I would like to say that the start of this movie was what caught me. Know one expects someone to “blow chucks” as the phrase goes during a competition right onto the audience. From that moment on I figured this had to be a funny and surprising movie. Stars Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp (from True Blood) and more talented actors.
Song in this movie include: “The Sign”, “212, “Lost in It”, “Let It Whip”, “Punching in A Dream”, “Keep You”, “Don’t Move”, “Titanium”, “Cups”, “No Diggity”, “Bulletproof”, plus alot more.
Joyful Noise is the story of a church choirs competition. This shows that not all gospel music has to be old fashioned. The sub-story adds flavor to the mix and the music brings it all together. This movie stars Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, Jeremy Jordan as well as many others including a small part by Kris Kristofferson.
Song in this movie include: “Not Enough”, “Man in the Mirror”, “Maybe I’m Amazed”, “From Here To The Moon and Back”, “Higher Medley”, and others.
See which one appeal to you more and above all enjoy the music.
Well I received an email from a friend asking me to listen to this group’s Christmas rendition of
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and take a look at this group.
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
This reminded me of the old 60’s version but I really love that lead singers voice.
With that said I decided to listen to their most recent album.
Yes, I found it a good listen and noticed they have more music.
For those of you in the Denver area you might want to check in at Herman’s Hideaway on Jan 4th.
See them live and then let me know what you think.
See these links Calder’s Revolvers, ReverbNation, MySpace, Facebook.
This Blu-ray that was released May of 2011, and has unseen footage as well rare interviews. It is split into two parts, with the Special features being that of music video’s, extended interviews and other stories.
This is one of the better documentaries of the life of a great band. I was amazed at the amount of information and wonderful clips that spanned the history of this band. I found myself getting all choked up towards the end of the documentary like Freddie had just died yesterday. Seeing the clips from the commemorative show made me remember back to all those great albums I own on vinyl.
I’m glad that the band has gone on, but we will always miss the very distinctive Freddie Mercury. His vocal range was amazing and his style was very much his own.
This documentary is worth a watch especially to Queen fans.
